Autism Teaching Institute delivers the following nationally recognised training courses:

Participants undertaking the Vocational Graduate Certificate in Teaching Students with ASD (22096VIC) and the Vocational Graduate Diploma of Teaching Students with ASD (22097VIC) will generally be qualified teachers from:

  • Primary schools
  • Secondary schools
  • Specialist schools, or
  • Registered Training Providers (RTOs)








Course duration:

The courses are designed for teachers/professionals working full time.

The Vocational Graduate Certificate has 4 units taken over 1 year part time study.

The Vocational Graduate Diploma involves all 7 units over 2 years part-time.





Course features:

The courses feature an ASD specific teaching practicum at Western Autistic School and at ATI partner schools with autism expertise. You will receive support, coaching and mentoring from an experienced teacher of students with ASDs.

The ASD specific teaching practicum of 45 days is integrated within the units and is a mandatory for successful completion of the diploma.

Flexible delivery and assessment arrangements will be provided, wherever possible.

Class sizes are typically 30 students.

Entry requirements:

To undertake the Vocational Graduate Certificate in Teaching Students with ASD (22097VIC) participants must be qualified teachers. Non teaching professionals working in the field of autism may complete a single unit for a fee and will receive a Statement of Attainment.

Entrants to the Vocational Graduate Diploma of Teaching Students with ASD (22096VIC) must have already achieved the competencies defined by the Vocational Graduate Certificate in Teaching Students with ASD (22097VIC). The Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) recognises the Diploma as a Special Education qualification.

Fees and Charges:

The Autism Teaching Institute will not collect student fees more then 10 weeks in advance of training. A payment schedule will be available and implemented by agreement with students on enrolment.

Course costs are as follows:


Vocational Graduate Certificate in Teaching Students with ASD (22097VIC) - $11,000

Vocational Graduate Diploma of Teaching Students with ASD (22096VIC)- $11,000

Applications for the 2012 intake of the Vocational Graduate Certificate in Teaching Students with ASD (22097VIC) will open October 2011.
