The Vocational Graduate Certificate is nested within the Vocational Graduate Diploma.
Completion of the Vocational Graduate Diploma by qualified teachers is recognised by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) as a special education qualification, and confers three year trained teachers four year trained status.

Participants undertaking the Vocational Graduate Certificate in Teaching Students with ASD (21687VIC) and the Vocational Graduate Diploma of Teaching Students with ASD (21688VIC) will generally be qualified teachers from:
§ Primary schools
§ Secondary schools
§ Specialist schools, or
§ Registered Training Providers (RTOs)
Course duration:
The courses are designed for teachers/professionals working full time.
The Vocational Graduate Certificate has 4 units taken over 1 year part time study.
The Vocational Graduate Diploma involves all 7 units over 2 years part-time.
Course features:
The courses feature an ASD specific teaching practicum at Western Autistic School and in some cases at partner schools with autism expertise. You will receive support, coaching and mentoring from an experienced teacher of students with ASDs.
The ASD specific teaching practicum of 45 days is integrated within the units and is a mandatory for successful completion of the diploma.
A variety of delivery modes including Saturday lectures and a specialised teaching practicum at Western Autistic School and at the base school classroom at Diploma level.
Flexible delivery and assessment arrangements will be provided, wherever possible.
Class sizes are typically 20 participants.
Entry requirements:
To undertake the full Vocational Graduate Certificate in Teaching Students with ASD (21687VIC) participants must be qualified teachers. Non-teachers may participate in single units, as indicated in course information brochure, and will receive a Certificate of Participation.
Entrants to the Vocational Graduate Diploma of Teaching Students with ASD (21688VIC) must have already achieved the competencies defined by the Vocational Graduate Certificate in Teaching Students with ASD (21687VIC).
There are no mandatory requirements for entry to the Course in ASD Support Work although it is suggested that students have completed Year 11 or equivalent, and preference is given to teacher aides supporting students with ASDs in schools.
Fees and Charges
The Autism Teaching Institute will not collect student fees more then 10 weeks in advance of training. A payment schedule will be available and implemented by agreement with students on enrolment.

Application and Enrolment Procedures
Applications for 2009 intake of the Vocational Graduate Certificate in Teaching Students with ASD (21687VIC) open on 18 August 2008. Closing date for applications is 28 November 2008.
Calls of interest and applications for the Course in ASD Support Work will be received throughout the year.
