Access and Equity
The Autism Teaching Institute (ATI) is committed to ensuring that all students are treated fairly and not discriminated against in terms of gender, race, disability, social diversity and learning opportunities, in accordance with access and equity principles and relevant legislation, in all aspects of their training and assessment.
Staff will be informed of access and equity principles at induction and will have access to the relevant policies and procedures through the school’s internal communication processes and procedures.
All training and assessment will be conducted in a manner consistent with the principles of access and equity.
Any cases of discrimination that emerge will be treated as per the Autism Teaching Institute Equal Opportunity procedure.
Appeals and Complaints
Appeals and complaints procedures are based on the principles of fairness, respectfulness and confidentiality. In the first instance, students should inform their teacher or a member of the Autism Teaching Institute staff that they wish to lodge a complaint or appeal. This may be undertaken either verbally or in writing.
The Autism Teaching Institute will ensure that each:
§ complaint and appeal and its outcome is recorded in writing;
§ appeal is heard by an independent person or panel;
§ appellant has an opportunity for a reassessment upon request;
§ appellant has an opportunity to formally present his or her case; and
§ appellant is given a written statement of the appeal outcomes, including reasons for the decision.
The Autism Teaching Institute will ensure that it acts upon the subject of any complaint found to be substantiated and will record all actions and outcomes in the ATI‘s 'Complaints and Appeals Register’.
Disciplinary Procedures
The Autism Teaching Institute is committed to establishing and maintaining an appropriate level of behaviour from its staff and students. As such, it is expected that students and staff will treat each other, and the students at Western Autistic School, with due care and consideration. It is also expected that proper care will be taken of school and ATI property, including computer hardware and the internet. It is also expected that each member of the school community will not discriminate against others in terms of gender, race and disability.
As such, a formal process will be established to deal with alleged discipline or misconduct issues.
